Ran
The day I learned to adapt my viewing experience to the asian way entirely, the acting being the thing I had to get used to the most, always overly expressive even when its not needed, I loved a lot of asian movies so far but always had that weird feeling about the acting part.
Ran completely eliminated that feeling for me, the part where that lady with the weird eyebrows starts laughing and mostly her acting in general would be considered laughable and poor in western cinema, but I learned to just see it as what it expresses and in a way I found amusement in the Clown like acting.
Overshadowing my now-gone worries is the whole rest of the movie tho, what a fucking art of its setpieces, visually beyond everything Ive seen despite maybe Barry Lyndon, colours, costumes, camerawork and the composition are all more than perfect, making the watch so admirable.
The story develops well and shows human morals, our selfish desires and ignorance for anything that we might demolish in its path. Its great and puts a perspective and embodyment of those aspects into each one of the characters.
The second part of the story is just showing a disastrous war with many deaths and destruction, with its battle scenes being the absolute highlight of it, rarely seen battles so fascinatingly done.
Visually and storytelling wise perfected to its limit, Kurosawa was practically blind doing this, masterful work and maybe my real start into asian cinema
