Suzhou River
"if i left you, would you look for me like mardar? forever? your whole life?""who's mardar?""a motorbike courier who spent his life looking for this girl he had loved and lost. everyone should have a love like that"
"yes."—
not only this remind me of both Wong Kar-wai's famous work, Fallen Angels (1995) and Chungking Express (1994), Lou Ye gave me a touch of his style on this. the almost 90% shaky shot he took in an odd angle, the color grading that shows Suzhou as raw as it is, the dialogue which is not perfect, but somehow captivating, and the decision of Lou Ye for the song that he picked for Moudan to sing in that specific karaoke scene, i love it so much. i was born to see this type of movies.
storywise, this screams if he wanted to, he would energy to me. the way that Mardar keep looking for Moudan, a love of his life, that disappeared without a trace everyday, is Lou Ye way of saying that love, is a thing that you should work for in order to get it, because once you got it, it'll set you free. Mardar a criminal courier with nothing much going on in his life, subconsciously, found himself when he's with Moudan, and when Moudan disappeared, he felt like a part of him was gone.
and the time he found her, he feel free again, he finally put the pieces of himself back together, the puzzle that went missing in his life, is completed. hence, the tragic ending.
after i discovered Albert Camus and Maria Casares and how they long for each other, and then this movie, i wish nothing, but may god grant me this type of love ALIAS KONTOLLLLLLLLL WHERE ARE YOU WOY IM SO READY TO SPOIL YOU WITH EVERYTHING I HAVE
