Aftersun
Just started to watch this film today after
having it for a very long time on my watchlist.
Charlotte Wells' own storytelling gives us a deep meaning about being a parent. They gave you joy while in fact, secretly hides their own suffering. Sophie, who was inspired by Charlotte's own personal childhood, spends the rest of the holiday in Turkey with her 30 year old father Calum unaware of her father's depression. As you can see, this film is a slowburn drama that reflects Charlotte's own personal life with her father. it's hard you know to tell your own personal memories to people—sometimes it's hard for them to understand your own feelings to your parents. As a teenager, i could feel how loving a parent is a hard thing to do, but we must try to reconnect with them while we still can. and if we failed, we might as well failed as a parent too. giving your parents & your children with love is the best way so we can treat our families better. Love is the only thing that keeps us together.
growing up as a fatherless son, i don't feel quite related to this movie because you know my father died years ago. i never knew my father very well and it really hurts to live without him. no one (except your mother), gave guidance to your life and taught you how to be a brave, independent young gentleman. even though I lived my entire life without a father, i will do my best to make the best for him.
Well, Aftersun, is just not a movie about fathers, but it also can be about mothers. Aftersun reflects our own personal relationship with our parents, not just fathers. Calum is a parent that is having personal struggles, of which he hide those problems with a happy, smiling face for her daughter Sophie. Calum is a figure that reflects many parents in real life. He is strong, and independently brave enough to raise his own daughter. he often smokes or use drugs to hide away his own feelings so that he can make his Sophie happy. therefore, he is great parent both in fiction and reality.
Hmm, gosh. even though this film didn't make me cry or something like that, but it truly helps me to fully understand my parents' struggles. This isn't just a movie, it's a memory that connects ourselves to our parents—fixing that broken bond back to the way it supposed to be.
Thank You, Charlotte Wells, for being the most awesome person in this planet.
