Pulp Fiction
"Three tomatoes are walking down the street. Papa Tomato, Mama Tomato, and Baby Tomato. Baby Tomato starts lagging behind and Papa Tomato gets really angry. He goes back and squishes him and says 'Catch up'. Ketchup" [Vincent chuckles]
Many call Pulp Fiction Quentin Tarantino's masterpiece. On first watch, I was pretty sure I disagreed. I preferred multiple of his other films. However, on rewatch, I enjoyed this so much more. I think I had it at an 8 or 9/10 after first watch, but after this, it's bordering 10/10. Genuinely could be perfect.
First, the writing in Pulp Fiction is just astounding. On first watch, I struggled to enjoy many scenes if it wasn't clear how they tied into the overall plot: the direction can be hard to gauge at times. However, on rewatch, I got so much value out of those scenes, mainly because of how great the dialogue is. Such 'meaningless' conversations, like the European burger conversation or Vincent's conversation's with Mia, become so engaging. It's one of Tarantino's key strengths in my opinion. He's able to be highly ambitious with the structure of his films and the unconventional way he tells the story, because his ability to engage the viewer in unfocused conversations, is just unrivalled. His characters are so well written and their conversations and so well put together, that their topic of conversation doesn't actually matter all of the time. The fact that off-topic conversations can be this good, only makes the crucial sequences even better. This may be THE film that embodies Tarantino's talent as a writer.
Love how funny this is as well. Samuel L. Jackson in particular is absolutely hilarious. That opening sequence where they interrogate those boys, is both intense and hilarious.
There is just so much I could talk about.
In summary, could be my second or third favourite Tarantino now. Just an incredible work of script-writing. 100% Recommended.
