What a journey. I’m beyond touched and moved by this story, and I’m ever grateful to everyone involved for providing this story with me, and especially to Sam Mendes’ grandfather, whose own personal story inspired the creation of this film.
The cinematography is FUCKING INSANE. LIKE ABSOLUTELY FUCKING INSANE. This movie is shot and edited so it plays as one continuous shot, with one single break in the middle, which really adds the the atmosphere of the movie and makes you feel like you’re living the movie with these characters. This allows for the emotions/feelings to resonate on an extreme level, whether that’s joy, sadness or the INTENSITY of the movie. My heart was racing the entire time and I was literally on the edge of my seat, in ways I’ve never felt about a movie before.
The score is GORGEOUS. Thomas Newman creates a sound that is haunting, intense, and beautiful all at the same time. The music really added that extra punch to the movie, and I don’t think it would have resonated as much without his extraordinary score.
This is a movie about hope and holding on to hope in the darkest of times, and those themes really resonated with me. I will definitely be thinking about this film for a long time.
