Diabolique
Wow, this is a masterpiece. it genuinely feels like Hitchcock made this! I like how it lets the tension build naturally without a ton of music or sound effects. The movie was a bit slow, ill admit that, but the payoff is amazing, and i feel like nobody in 1955 found this movie boring, since our brains are trained now for fast paced stuff from TikTok, and movies nowadays are generally designed to be more actiony and entertaining to keep us hooked, while back then not many movies (like this one) could afford that, also with the much more limited technology, so audiences were used to slower movies and didn't have goldfish brains. The movie does use common storytelling techniques, but thats only because so so so many movies and stories use these techniques now; I'm sure they weren't as common in 1955. The chemistry between the two leads was so good, i can't deny i agree with the reviews that say they were expecting them to fall in love and kiss. Its also such a meticulously and carefully done movie too, making sure every scene lands the exact way the director wants. yes Véra Clouzot's acting can feel melodramatic or stagy by todays standards, but you have to remember that she's not a bad actress and this is just how a lot of movies were at the time. I know it seems like I'm making excuses for the film, but i genuinely loved the twist at the end and don't even care about its negatives.
