It’s an incredible movie man what can i say! It’s incredible how Denzel Washington is playing like three different characters throughout this just a crazy, crazy performance. At its stride this movie has as much clear eyed control and focus on the moment in history it’s presenting as any work of art I’ve ever seen. Gets a little sluggish here and there through its long run time but man is it a monumental achievement of a movie.

These guys are really good at writing stories with stakes being added from every direction without any of them feeling unnatural or forced. And they’re also really good at writing characters that are slimy little conniving bastards whose lives fall apart that are people that i would still like to be. Really apparent how unfair it is that Josh got Ronald Bronstein in the Safdie brother divorce. Good enough movie that im willing to forgive the anachronistic soundtrack which is an enormous concession on my behalf and should speak to how much i really did like this thing.

When i was younger i used to identify quite strongly with ralphie and his youthful Christmas exploits. But now I’m reaching into my twilight years and I’ve started to really understand the parent’s perspective. How do you like that.

You just can’t get it any better than this
