Monster
If only some people can have it, that's not happiness. That's just nonsense. Happiness is something anyone can have.
I genuinely do not know how to begin this. I love movies that don't spoon-feed you information, rather you are given clues throughout the movie and it is on you to piece it together, I'm going to be honest for the majority of the film I had no idea what's going on. Monster takes a very interesting approach, repeating the same story, bits and pieces of it from different perspectives which leaves you wondering who the actual monster is, only to realize that human minds aren't as binary as that, and that the supposed monsters are hiding within our own skins. Kore-eda does the most delicate job at portraying queer feelings in kids as young as fifth graders, to a point it's so subtle and heartfelt that you only realize the gravity of the bond between Yori and Minato by the very end of the movie. It potrays societal expectations, standards we push on children so young, if not directly still subconsciously. This is genuinely one of those films that doesn't put every piece together but isn't that how our own lives are? From a secondary perspective, we cannot really tell exactly what's going on in a person's life. Absolutely wonderful movie, these young kids deserved none of what happened to them.
