Sing Sing
I’m honestly a bit speechless after this.
This is a truly incredible film. I laughed, I cried, I felt completely drained by the end. And knowing that the story is grounded in something so real gives everything an extra weight that really hits.
A24 doing what they do best again. On a technical level, there’s something about the way this is shot that I can’t fully explain, but it looks beautiful. The camera, the focus, the intimacy of it all… it just pulls you in. I also loved that they included footage of the original performances at the end, that detail adds so much.
The soundtrack works well, even if it stays more in the background compared to everything else going on.
Performance-wise, this movie stands on two main pillars for me. Colman Domingo and Clarence Maclin. Colman is phenomenal, easily one of his best performances. The way he conveys emotion, whether it’s pain, joy, or quiet reflection, is just incredible. And Clarence Maclin playing himself… that was the biggest surprise. The way he shows growth and evolution throughout the film feels so real and powerful.
The supporting cast is great too. Paul Raci and Sean San Jose stand out, and the rest of the ensemble, many of them playing versions of themselves, bring so much authenticity. You can really feel their connection to theatre and how much work is behind every scene.
The story is both beautiful and hard to watch. It shows the flaws of the prison system, what life is like inside, and how something like acting can become a way to survive mentally, to escape in some sense. It’s tough, but at the same time, there’s something deeply human and hopeful about it.
Emotions are constantly there, just under the surface or hitting you all at once. 100% a must-watch.
Sometimes it’s just a little too much on the heart.
