Spirited Away
I absolutely loved this one. Honestly, it’s fighting for the top spot as my favorite Miyazaki film alongside Howl’s Moving Castle. And yeah… what can I even say at this point. The animation and the soundtrack are simply spectacular, some of the best I’ve ever seen. Even looking back now, it still feels completely flawless and timeless.
Rumi Hiiragi as Chihiro is amazing. Her voice performance gives the character so much personality and emotion, and it really helps you connect with her journey. The story itself is beautiful. On the surface it may look simple, but it touches so many themes at once. There’s a bit of love, but also a strong focus on work, effort, and personal growth. Watching Chihiro slowly change from a scared, insecure girl into someone brave and determined is incredibly satisfying.
I also loved how the movie explores identity. Chihiro literally losing her name and having to remember who she truly is feels powerful and surprisingly emotional. The environmental message with the polluted river spirit is another moment that really stood out, subtle but meaningful. And of course, the Japanese folklore. Every creature, every place, every detail feels magical and fascinating. It’s a world you just want to stay in forever.
This felt like a true cinematic experience. A film full of heart, imagination, and soul. I feel like I’m discovering a wonderful new universe with Miyazaki’s films, and honestly, everyone should experience this at least once in their life.
Now I’m more than ready for Princess Mononoke.
