Amélie
The movie spoke to me from beginning to end. Much more than cute and charming, it carries an urgent message.
Let's start with the basics: the film is visually enriched with very vibrant colors, with shades of red, green, brown and yellow. This infuses the movie with that magical, fantasy-like air (and I thought some actual magic was going to happen, but it’s not that kind of movie). The omniscient narration is essential. I felt like I was listening to a fairy tale, as if I already knew things would end well and that the characters' stories would have a good conclusion. It was important to highlight a trait of Amélie: she wasn't one to talk or open up, and I identified with that deeply. I keep imagining what the film would be like without the narration, and perhaps we would still understand the story, but we wouldn't know Amélie's desires and anxieties so intimately. *Everything was so colorful on the outside, but certain things were black and white on the inside.*
**
The way Amélie pays attention to people, to the details (that is so rare). She uses this "gift" (I think it can even be called a "gift") to serve others, so discretely and creatively. Nothing stops her from giving a "little push" to see someone happy. She seems to play the role of a guardian angel, intervening minimally but with precision, without seeking credit. Right from the start, you realize she was only forgetting one person: herself. For me, that’s where the main message lies: the way she had so much courage to change the lives of others but never used the same power to help herself. It’s like when we know how to give the right advice to others, but when it’s time to act in our own lives, we remain stagnant, lost, wasting potential.
The most touching part was the role reversal the film created with her neighbor, Mr. Dufayel, who never left his apartment but was constantly watching her with affection, without her knowing. This fascinated me because she thought she was the only observer. The moment between the two that captivated me the most was when he produces a video for Amélie, essentially telling her to do a little of what she does for others for herself, to be happy and to have the courage to take life's risks.
I think our tendency is to isolate ourselves a little more each time. I once read in a book by Dr. Jordan Peterson (whom I like a lot) that "if you don't reveal yourself to others, you won't be able to reveal yourself to yourself." "Don't become incomplete," he says, "life is too hard for someone incomplete." I think Amélie's main message can easily be summarized by that phrase. Amélie was afraid to reveal herself, to put herself in a vulnerable position. Her desire to help and see people happy was stronger, and she did it discreetly. She did good in silence, but at the end of the day, it was just her and her own dreams. It's as if the movie is asking us: 'What you do is beautiful, but do you do it for yourself too? Do you love yourself as you love others? Do you care for yourself as you care for others? Do you try to make yourself happy as you try to make others happy?' and that is profoundly real.
Besides Mr. Dufayel, I think the character that also stood out was the photo booth technician. Amélie and Nino created a story in their heads, full of paranoia and imagination, which I found entertaining. Learning the truth was like a splash of cold water, it was funny and provided a good dose of reality to all the fantasy the movie carried up to that point. I think this was the element that balanced the fantasy of the story. He was just a technician. Working. Life just… happening!

Trabalhando. A vida… acontecendo!
