The Shining
I can’t have déjà vu anymore without instantly thinking of *The Shining.* And what a GREAT movie. Seriously, so good. I’ll admit I had to do a bit of research to wrap my head around some parts, especially the ending. This one video tied together all the floating thoughts I had while watching, and even showed me things I hadn’t noticed. There are so many theories and interpretations still being discussed to this day, which is exactly what makes it a true classic.
I’m not gonna get into which metaphor or theory makes the most sense to me. I think you can take this movie as far as you want to. You can stay on the surface and just enjoy it as a disturbing horror film, make some connections here and there, or dive into the deeper, philosophical side of it, which is definitely my favorite approach.
Now, let’s talk about Kubrick and his genius. This is only the second film of his I’ve seen, and I already consider myself a fan. Watching The Shining gave me the same feeling I had with A Clockwork Orange: it’s like Kubrick points a flashlight at the darkest corners of our minds, the ones we either don’t know exist yet or try to hide and deny. He brings all that rot to light and represents it through extremes. Jack could’ve just been an impatient father, a husband who belittles his wife, a failed writer… but instead, he’s completely and uncontrollably consumed by his own vices and tries to kill his family with an axe. It’s as if Kubrick is saying, “Hey, you could be in Jack’s place. Anyone could. Are you seeing what you need to do to not get there?”
*Kubrick once said: “We are capable of the greatest good and the greatest evil, and the problem is that we often can’t tell them apart when it suits our purposes.”*
