Backrooms
This was amazing but maybe slightly over hyped.
A lot of people were saying things like “don’t bring food in” or “you need a strong stomach to watch this” but in reality, there were no moments where I felt like I couldn’t eat my popcorn or felt sick, and I feel like everyone in the cinema felt the same.
On a more positive note, every time a character entered the Backrooms, there was an immense feeling of dread. I liked how the film made it so that you knew as much about this place as the characters did. Neither you or the character knew what was around the corner, which made some terrifying and gripping moments. Also, the found footage style scenes were amazing and created a sincere feeling of unease.
One thing I didn’t really like, and why it’s a 3 and a half out of five rather than a 4, is that the movie doesn’t explain the Backrooms or Async in great detail. I’m sure the second movie, which was set up at the end of this one and has pretty much been confirmed by Kane Parsons, will go into much deeper detail about The Backrooms and Async.
The fact that this is a debut film is unreal because it was really well made. The cinematography was amazing and truly made you feel claustrophobic and made you feel like you were there in the Backrooms with the character’s. I really do think that Kane Parsons is a natural film maker and has potential to be an amazing director. He wasn’t even old enough to drink when he made this film so just think what he could do with a bit more experience.
Altogether, I think this was a solid horror, but I think it maybe left a few too many details unexplained and I don’t think it went into Mary’s childhood enough.
Edit: I now realise that because nothing in the Backrooms is meant to make sense, you are meant to be confused and it wasn’t meant to go into a lot of detail. Even though I have considered this, it’s still not getting 4 stars because at the end of the day it wasn’t the best ending, not bad, just not the best. Also, Mary’s childhood really had to be explored more.
