Loved it a lot when it came out but everytime I see it I enjoy it a little less, probably cause I watched it too many times too soon, confused feelings about it rn
4/10
This movie really didn't take with me, it just felt like this product for millennial moms that attempts to be a feminist movie in the lamest way possible. There is no subtext, nothing implied, it lays out things straight out on the table as if the audience has no comprehension skills. it mentions issues about the brand and toy but does nothing to fix or excuse anything. It's probably the foremost modern example of diluting feminist ideals to fit into a corporate product with nothing actually interesting or new to say at all, and the fact everybody likes it makes me feel stupid for not liking it? Based on what everyone was saying I expected it to go beyond the 2010s wave of disney feminism, but it didn't, it just doubled down on it. That scene where they "cure" the barbies of the patriarchy by listing off some of the most basic feminist thoughts just felt like it was treating me as an idiot. Which might be the point? This movie was clearly just made to sell more barbies and it worked extremely well so maybe that's why? Not to mention how cis and hetero centric this whole movie is? it feels like a huge oversight or a very conscious restriction put on by mattel
The one moment that was slightly interesting was the ending with the billie eilish song but the song says more than the actual movie and in a better way. Also by that point it had lost me so it didn't have any impact. The whole experience genuinely made me sad
The only redeeming factor was michael cera but he's there in like 2 scenes
