Midnight Mass
7/10
On one hand the series is an excellent exploration of mistaking something for divine intervention and the way that they tackled the subject of religious fanaticism and faith was really well done in my opinion. There were even some scenes that I would call pretty great and rather beautiful and poetic, these were the most emotionally poignant scenes of the whole show in my opinion (Hassan and Ali's ending scene and Erins and Rileys conversation about death).
But there are also some rather big gripes that I have with the show, namely the ending and some lackluster character development (and yes I know that this is a short show but look at shows like True Detective season 1 and FLCL that manage to pack a lot more substance into the short runtime).
The ending is in no way a bad ending but I wanted so much more from a character and thematic standpoint, I think that the problem accured because the writers were to busy writing a big climactic final scene that would be satisfying for a normal "popcorn watcher" and it was. But from my viewpoint it was a little lacking in capitalizing on everything it had built up on (how easy it is to mistake good from evil and misinterpriting the word of god for your own selfish benefit and so on).
I really enjoyed the show, the acting was good, the writing from a storytelling view was very good and all the technicals were there in my opinion, it was in the characters and themes it fell short for me a little bit but I would still recommend this very engaging and fun to watch show but watch out you will likely become very frustrated with a certain character and if you are already on the edge with religion this show won't do you any favors.
