Poor Things
Exceptional in its visuals and performances all around. Willem Dafoe is brilliant as always, the scientist with a reverence for observation. Ramy Youssef is a purely sweet romantic and idealist doctor embodying the old adage “If you love something, set it free…” Mark Ruffalo’s descent into desolation is nothing short of staggering and uncomfortable in the very best way. And, of course, Emma Stone as the transcendent Bella, whose innocently crass abstention from “the polites” results in the most miraculous rediscovery of the world. Poor Things is a bright star in the world of (VERY mature) childlike bildungsromans.
