The Lobster
The Lobster (2015) | ☆☆☆☆
“One day, as he was playing golf, he thought that it is more difficult to pretend that you do have feelings when you don't than to pretend you don't have feelings when you do”
I did not know what to expect going into this and I was weirdly surprised.
The idea of a world where you have to be in a relationship or else you’ll turn into an animal is quite an interesting concept. I believe in a world like this, it doesn’t matter if you really love your partner, the only important thing is that you have something in common. You can literally see (or hear) that in the way the people interact with each other. Everything they talk about is on surface level and they’ve all got that same monotone voice. It even felt awkward at times (almost all the time).
I found the character of David really interesting. At first we saw him really try to fit in and even choose to change things about himself just to find a partner. But when his brother was killed (by that stupid fucking bitch omg I hate her) he kind of broke. But even with the Loners he couldn’t be himself. Even “the free” in this world had strict rules and if not obeyed even killed (in the worst case scenario). He could never really be free because even when he then escaped the Loners he still stood in front of the choice to try and fit in (and hurt himself in the process) or turn into an animal.
I also like how we got an open ending. It really makes you think about what you would do if you were in his position. Personally I think I would not make myself go blind and just accept my fate to be turned into an animal. But that’s just me. I don’t really know what David would do though. He’s quite a complex character and even though he wasn’t that turned away from turning into a lobster in the beginning, I think his believes changed though out the film and he’d now even consider going blind for the woman he loves.
