Hamnet
This is a perfect film, a love letter to drama. It hit me when Max Richter's 'On the Nature of Daylight' began that Zhao had tied a chord between Hamlet, the 16th/17th century play, and her film Hamnet. I loved the touches of magic realism here and there. I also loved how, in my mind, Shakespeare transformed from a mythic figure into a real human being. I wonder where we would be without Shakespeare's influence.
Also, I'm bringing back my cry score for this one. I was the only person in the theater, and I was crying so hard I didn't notice the cleaning crew person walk in. I stood up to leave, and they said, "Oh, you should have seen me the first time I saw it. I was crying so hard, I was a mess." "Oh, was I crying loud enough for you to hear me?" "No, I had no idea you were crying." ........... Then how'd you know from 8 rows away?
