The Devils
The Devils is based on the book The Devils of Loudun by Aldous Huxley. it tells the story of demonic possession in a convent in the town of Loudun, France in the 18th century. it also deals with the trial of priest Urbain Grandier who is accused of witchcraft and corruption against God.
the film was censored upon release because of its subject matter. many critics found it to be an attack on the Catholic Church. they considered the film immoral and scandalous.
i think this film was ahead of its time. it denounces religious and political authorities who manipulate faith to strengthen their own power. religion was used by l’État to manipulate and control citizens. the film goes against the moral codes of its time to reveal sexual repression within the Church.
despite its censorship, The Devils is an essential film. it is important for having denounced the dangers of religious glorification and the hypocrisy of l’État and the Church at the time. it was one of the best experiences i’ve had as a spectator this year. this film goes straight into my top 4 letterbox films of the moment. i desperately need to read The Devils of Loudun asap! i also need to go to Loudun (it’s an hour’s drive from me) to learn more about this story and then watch the film again.
