Withnail & I
"Eating" coffee like that from a bowl with a spoon genuinely cannot be legal. Also why are all British people absolutely obsessed over the words "bloody" and "bastard". There are a lot of good quotes in this movie as well. It honestly really surprises me that this film is marked as a comedy. Sure there are a few comedic aspects, but also there are a ton of deep, serious themes that are being explored. I think it could even be classified as tragic, especially if looking at the end, but not even. Basically everything that's happening and their methods to dealing with it are not the wisest, but what I mean about the end is how it shows how "I" moves on to the more mature life, getting a lead role in his acting and moving out, in a way, getting away from his past self. Withnail on the other hand is shown at his complete lowest towards the end and being self-destructive, he is left alone. I even saw in another review that in the original story he ends up killing himself and that is something that I can definitely picture happening after the final scene. I do think their relationship is very unique and special, and quite interesting too. The acting performance was great as well and I think that the cast made a big impact too. Also, while the character Danny simply looks like a drug addict, I found him very interesting. To be fair I didn't love this movie at the very start, but after getting to know the characters better and starting to understand their relationship more it got way way better and after that it just kept on getting better all the way to the very end. Another thing is that I do like British, I think it's quite interesting and so watching a film that is very much British was kind of "satisfying?" in a way and I really enjoyed it. So overall it's an amazing movie. I do believe that the start is a bit weak, but like I mentioned, it might just be due to not being familiar with the characters at that point yet.
