Robert Eggers has taken what Francis Ford Coppola started with Bram Stoker’s Dracula and elevated it to new heights. Nosferatu is a masterpiece of direction, with a visual aesthetic so meticulously crafted it feels like pure art. Eggers has revived gothic horror with breathtaking performances from Lily-Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Willem Dafoe, and Emma Corrin, each one fully inhabiting their roles and perfectly capturing the director’s vision. Lily-Rose Depp stands out as one of the year’s breakout stars, establishing herself as a future queen of horror. Aaron Taylor-Johnson continues to impress with consistently stellar performances, and Willem Dafoe takes on a role once inhabited by Anthony Hopkins and elevates it even further, solidifying his status as one of the greatest supporting actors of any film. And the film’s true standout is Bill Skarsgård, delivering an incredible and faithful portrayal of Nosferatu, evoking sheer terror through his mere presence. His interpretation of Count Orlok is nothing short of magnificent. The aesthetic, story and script are all brilliant, making Nosferatu arguably the closest thing to a perfect Eggers film yet.
