Hamnet
what do you see?
personally, i can’t see a thing because i wept through almost the entirety of this movie, and my eyes are sore and puffy.
but in all seriousness, wow. wowwowowowowowow. this cast. this story. i am in SUCH awe.
firstly, I’ve never seen grief SO innately captured on screen. jessie buckley has such a genuine and honest approach to storytelling, and her incredible ability to convey such intricate and complex emotions has left me awestruck. truly a one of a kind actress. one of the best (if not THE best) of our time. such a prize.
jacobi jupe!! how he was able to perfectly capture the nuances of death and loss at the ripe age of 12 years old????? i will never understand, but wow am i impressed. such a precious kid- he steals your heart as soon as he steps foot on the screen, and holds it firmly throughout the remainder of the story.
truly such standout performances across the board.
other things that really steal the show are the intention behind camera angles, as well as the costuming. nothing is left unseen unless it is absolutely intended to be. with the angles- the entanglement of the two children, the way you think they are one?? the way hamnet discovers judith is sick for the first time??? the angles looking down from the heavens that foreshadow hamnets life and eventual death??? MY GOD. and the COSTUMES!! the way we see each of them come undone one by one!!! the colors!!!! they tell such a story and aid in the progression of the story so well. nothing is overdone, or distracting in anyway, it’s as if their clothes are living through them.
I could go on and on and on. this was genuinely a perfect movie in my eyes. Chloé Zhao you are super human, thank you for this masterpiece.
