Shame
A lifetime of unresolved trauma gives way to suppressed anguish, slowly manifesting into tragedy. Masterclass in filmmaking from Steve McQueen with one of my favorite performances of the 2010s from Michael Fassbender. A multilayered performance built around a character that is fascinatingly written, anchored in quiet desperation. Long, uncomfortable shots with somber piano and restrained intensity. Fassbender running through NYC avoiding his inner turmoil needs to be its own genre. It’s a Shame I waited this long to experience this masterpiece.
