Inception
If you're going to make any Nolan film your first, make it this one...
I find that the best films for me are those that you go into without really having high expectations or sometimes no expectations at all and then get absolutely blown away by what you watch. In the case of Inception I can't possibly say that I expected this film to be shit when I know that everybody loves it, but I didn't really give it's impact on me much thought either before I watched it. "Holy shit", will be my rating.
I would like to specify that in my case "Holy shit" is not that I've experienced some mind bending 2 and a half hours but that this film is so well thought through and so well crafted that you cannot help but whisper "Holy shit" to yourself every few minutes.
The way Nolan builds tension is so good that you don't realise that he is building tension until you are on the edge of your seat. We are told from the very beginning that time is key as Nolan once again plays with time and space to create a hyper tense setting in which the audience itself feels like checking their own watches, trying to exist in the same sync with the characters. This is probably my favourite feature of Nolan's in any of his works but it works especially well in the final 40 or so minutes of Inception.
I found myself absolutely engrossed in the story and whilst the relationships that Nolan builds between his characters are not the most believable, the plot and the sound design create an almost immersive atmosphere. Overall, pretty fucking good film.
