Sentimental Value
Sentimental Value feels like a film about the impossibility of ever fully knowing ourselves in one moment. Nothing suddenly folds open. Nothing arrives as one grand revelation. It is always a journey , Journey of living, of making art, of remembering, of slowly becoming capable of looking at the things we spent years avoiding.
And somehow, making art becomes where so much of our reality begins to surface. As if everything we carry has been waiting for someone soft enough to let it crack open, layer by layer.
There are people who read us like a book they already know. They can see when something hurts. They know why it hurts. They can almost see the pain quietly eating away at parts of us. But instead of comforting us by telling us what they see, they ask enough questions for us to find the answers ourselves. They leave the door open just a little, then a little more, until suddenly we're the ones saying it out loud. And there's something deeply kind about that. They make you feel in control, even when you're not. Sometimes that feeling alone gives you enough courage to get up and fight your own fights.
I think Sentimental Value understands that kind of tenderness.
And Renate Reinsve is extraordinary at embodying it. She has this ability to make emotional complexity feel almost weightless, yet somehow it rocks you completely. She doesn't seem to perform emotions so much as inhabit the strange, contradictory space where emotions actually exist. A hesitation, a look, a change in her voice ,sometimes that's all she needs, and suddenly you feel like you've been allowed into an entire **inner world.
**
She carries everything so lightly, but nothing about it feels small.
Maybe that's what has stayed with me most so far the idea that understanding ourselves isn't something that happens all at once. Sometimes we need another person, sometimes we need art, sometimes we simply need enough space to finally hear ourselves. And maybe the most meaningful people aren't the ones who tell us who we are, but the ones who are gentle enough to let us discover it ourselves.
Sentimental Value feels like a film about discovery ,about life, art, memory, and all the things inside us that take time to become visible.
