Silence
Still uncomfortable after watching
It's hard to wrap my head around that Scorsese directed the wolf of wall street only 3 years earlier and the last temptation of Christ before that so I have absolutely no idea where he stands on religion. Although it's not a true story, the torture of Christians in Japan was a real 250 year campaign and it doesn't censor the methods they used to murder and torture Priests.
Andrew Garfield was unbelievably good and the depictions of Christ were incredibly well done and leaves a pit in your stomach, especially the reflection Father Rodriguez sees in the water. As well as Christ approving Rodrigues stepping on him because He was sent to this world to be martyred.
Silence captures the experience of divine absence during persecution or personal trials better than any film I've seen.
After all, the novel after which this movie is based is written by the proof that the Japanese were not successful in eradicating Christianity from their country, Shusako Endo, the author of the novel, was a Catholic...
No matter what your personal conviction is, Silence makes you confront how you act when no ones watching.
