A good example why you shouldn’t trust rotten tomatoes. Both the acting and the cinematography was insanely great in digger, Tom Cruise should be awarded for his performance and the rest of the cast as a whole (especially Riz Ahmed) should be applauded. On top of this the set design and even the blocking were top notch (you know it’s true if even I can notice good blocking). Before seeing this film I had seen a lot of non spoiler reviews saying they felt digger was thematically weak, in a like ,politician = bad and oil companies = bad, kind way. But I whole heartedly disagree with this. I don’t think that’s the main message digger wanted to convey. Like yes no one going into this film thought ‘you know what this world needs more oil monopolies’ and I think Inarritu is a competent enough writer to know people know that. Instead I think the whole message goes back to what Jesse Plemmons’ character says in his main speech around 3/4 into the movie. (spoilers onwards) He recollects on going to the theatre when he was younger to watch a shoddily produced play taking the piss out of his own family. Despite this and despite what was happening to the world, when it came to an end he and everyone else burst into an applause. The feeling of that night stood with him for 15 years and it’s that feeling he wanted to bring to people through his produced version of the same play. The ending credits of digger show a completely run down society, thanks to Plemmons’ character a handful of people could escape that and feel what he did 15 years ago. So I think digger is really about the power of the arts no matter the state of the world. Wish I saw this on an imax screen :’)
