Challengers
usually, I feel like Luca Guadagnino captures the fluctuations, the subtleties of his characters. In this movie, they feel firmly constructed. He managed to depict archetypes that still feel deeply personal . And I think the character's development is what makes this film more than simply "good". It won't be my favorite of his movies because I think I like it more when it's poetic, but I am also sensitive to the rawness of Challengers.
Moreover, I loved the ambiguity between Art and Patrick and the way Luca translates the tension. The ending makes you think that maybe love wasn't about Tashi. He has a breathtaking way of filming beautiful actors.
It's much less original but i still liked the way the movie was built, with flashbacks that help you better understand the intensity of the match. He could have done a love triangle story, but here it's the match that tells the story. All characters struggle with expressing themselves and he managed to picture how tennis can do it for them.
Altogether, I think Luca did a great job at keeping his personal touches in a storyline that isn’t what he usually does.
