Anora

This was too overhyped.. The story was okay and somewhat entertaining but I found the execution to be shallow. Anora is the main character of it all but I feel like she’s just the vessel for a plot. she responds to situations but doesn’t shape them, and her motivations are directionless.. She wants to stay married but it’s never really talked about why that is so it makes her look weak and lack substance. The applause for this movie feels forced almost; it makes me feel like I’m missing something. The portrayal of sex workers was also applauded for this movie. however, the movie doesn’t explore these themes in a meaningful way.. it lacks depth and it shows only surface level representation that relies on aesthetics. Mikey Madison did do a lot for this movie though. I feel like if it was any other actress playing this role it wouldn’t be as praised as it is.
