Milk
during this film, more than anything, I kept thinking: God, I’m so grateful I’m queer in the present time. Because this film makes it impossible to ignore the reality of what came before, the courage it took just to exist openly, let alone to fight.
Watching Harvey Milk’s story unfold feels both inspiring and devastating. It’s not framed as some distant, abstract history it feels so so immediate, human, and painfully real. You see the joy, the community, the small wins!! but also the constant threat, the hatred, the exhaustion of having to justify your right to exist. And it hits you that so many people fought, suffered, and even lost their lives just so future generations could live something closer to a “normal” life. I felt that deeply. There’s a kind of inherited grief in watching it, grieving people you never knew, but somehow owe so much to.
The performances are incredible across the board. Sean Penn COMPLETELY disappears into Harvey Milk it doesn’t feel like acting, it feels like witnessing someone’s life UGH. The supporting cast brings so much nuance too, no one feels flat or forgettable. Every character adds to that sense of a living movement. And stylistically, it’s such a compelling film. The camera work has this almost documentary-like intimacy at times, blending archival footage with dramatisation so seamlessly that it blurs the line between past and present. It makes the story feel grounded, like you’re right fucking there. It’s not flashy, it’s purposeful. And that restraint makes it even more powerful.
What I really appreciated is how educational it is without ever feeling like a lecture. You come away understanding the political climate, the stakes, the urgency, but through emotion, through people, through lived experience. By the end, I just felt this deep, aching appreciation. For the people who came before. For the fights that were fought. For the fact that I get to exist more freely because of them.
I love being queer, not in spite of that history, but because of the resilience and community it represents.
