After Hours
Poor Paul, he really just wanted those paper clips.
Pacing, the film is very fast paced. I feel like it just it’s nuts really. I found the pacing to be very fast. If you give it a couple of minutes at the beginning it really gets going. I think that it’s pure comedy gold and just what the fuck is going on? Makes it really fun. It’s not one of those think about it like matrix, it’s more just like it’s a very funny film. While it does have some subjects that may be upsetting, the film is very funny.
One of those films, what I mean by it’s one of those films is that it’s just you have to see it? What I mean is you have to see it as in you can’t explain it really. The best you can say is he goes to get some paper clips, and the rest is just a fever dream from on there. The film is hard to explain. It’s not necessarily explainable. I think from the taxi ride scene, the rest is history really. It’s very funny but again it’s very hard to say anything without spoiling it. It’s just watch it and you’ll see. As it’s also very entertaining.
Comedy, the film was very funny. I think that it’s one of the funniest films I’ve seen in a while in my opinion. The funny thing is knowing Scorsese, I thought it was just a surreal drama experience. It was way more of a comedy with mixes of black comedy through out the film. In the end I watched the credits thinking what did I just watch. It was a masterpiece that’s what I watched. The timing worked really well, and I also felt that the fact it was so weird and like quirky. Was just awesome. Another thing I wanted to say is it was very out of pocket.
Martin Scorsese cameo, now it’s not necessarily a spoiler as I’m not saying anything plot wise. But there is a scene where he is there for a few seconds, it made me shout “MARTIN! MARTIN!”. It’s always nice seeing a great director in their own film. Except you Tarantino. I know what kinda cameos you do. Just to say the n word, take feet pics and leave. Still love your work though. Although Martin Scorsese was in taxi driver as well which was cool. His father was also in this which I thought was sweet (Cameo I believe somewhere throughout).
Cinematography, now it’s not necessarily the greatest but I wanted to say that the shots made you feel very uncomfortable. Like something was off about it. I really liked it, some shots were better than others and quite a lot. But in the end there was a sense of uncertainty on what would happen next. I really liked that. It added suspense to the film and it just worked well. I assumed it was just a drama and the cinematography shows it. Quite like a thriller in a way. The suspense was there in the shots.
Surreal, the film is incredibly surreal and very trippy. It’s a fever dream and you don’t exactly know what’s going on. It’s kinda one of those films that you just experience it. It’s not exactly something you would probably understand. If you do then congrats tell me. But I think it’s about the whole experience of the night. In the end anything can happen in after hours. Everything about it was just very, interesting let’s say. It’s like a massive fever dream to be completely honest.
David Lynch vibes, obviously rest in peace I will eat two cookies and a coke for you. But the film has vibes to David Lynch. What I mean is in the way of how it’s a very surreal experience. But sometimes just experiencing the film is enough for me. I can’t say I exactly get it, but I do understand that it was amazing. If I had to pick a film I couldn’t necessarily. But if you’ve seen a bit of his films like me. But it’s very similar feeling. Very surreal which I love.
Entertaining, the film was really fresh for me. I love a film like this. It’s such a great and fun film. Very engaging with its strange characters and the vibe of the film is very good. It is my favourite Scorsese so far. This sort of works with pacing but I think it’s just very fast and just works so well. It’s definitely very rewatch able I feel. It’s not got something that makes it like ehh after seeing it I’m not interested again. It was just an incredible 90 minutes.
Characters, the characters in this film were interesting really. Paul was one of the only normal people to be honest. Tom also seemed like the only sane person as well. To be honest everyone was sane. Except the people in the apartment. They were pretty weird, KiKi I believe that’s how to spell the characters name, and their boyfriend. Pretty weird people.
Would I recommend? Yes I would highly recommend watching this. It’s an easy watch, while yes it’s very surreal and a massive fever dream. It’s such an entertaining and great movie. It’s very funny, very easy to watch. It’s just a great film honestly. I loved it, but if you’re not interested in fever dreams that have uncomfortable shots, and a cameo from the director. Then it’s not for you.
Overall, my conclusion is that the film was fantastic. It was excellent and just very entertaining to me. I think the reason it’s my favourite Scorsese is because while it’s very simple compared to something like casino. He makes it extremely complex, go into this blind I beg of you and it is very strange but it’s so good. I would highly suggest checking it out, if you want to.
