Beau Is Afraid
Forget Beau being afraid, I’m fucking afraid😭.
I’ve noticed I’ve been on Netflix a lot watching films, no problem with that just thought it was worth mentioning, also the fact that most are highly rated, well 50/50, the ones that are aren’t Netflix original’s to be fair.
This film feels like your being stalked, it makes you feel so paranoid of EVERYTHING. You step into Beau’s world which would be a usually day, but after around 10 minutes and then till the credits, is a total WTF is actually going on. I think I love this film due to the insane nature of it. Ari Aster has this thing with traumatising me, and showing me things that will stay with me for life, wether it’s Midsommar, hereditary, both great films. But they have something in common, it’s the disturbing vibe of the film. I think in this one I was a bit surprised Netflix called this a “comedy”, I didn’t find myself laughing Netflix. Just found myself thinking, what on EARTH is going on.
You see Beau is afraid feels like a fever dream nightmare, that seems to be endless, you could pinch yourself and not wake up. It’s one of those dreams, your trapped, confused, upset and scared. Watching this film shows you these emotions through the entirety of this film. It’s deeply distressing moments that have made me reconsider what I was watching, to moments that felt so surreal and made me ponder the question, is any of this real? I think the key thing that made me feel all three of these emotions together, was the attic scene. Now I’m not gonna spoil anything, as it’s such a crazy, heavy, and uneven film. Where you never know if you’re really safe. I think what traumatised me with the attic scene, was that so much happened at once, it was like a bombshell dropping on you. It felt almost as if you were trapped, vulnerable at every cost. While the film keeps being a total mindfuck, that cuts corners, doesn’t play fair, and it leaves you with a sick feeling in your stomach.
I also wanted to say sorry to myself for under appreciating Joaquin Phoenix, I love him as joker, I do it’s a great take on not just the prince of crime, but a take on a man who wasn’t going to take it anymore, a mentally ill sick man, that the world chooses to pick on, because they feel like it. I will do a review when I get to rewatching it on joker. But back to where I was, he was genuinely so good in this film. To a point where it was like this could be one of his best roles, he was so emotionally raw, and acted so vulnerable and like this fragile object. It was genuinely incredible to see. It’s probably my favourite role of his, and in ways I felt this film is underrated, due to the fact that not enough people talk about it on social media, and if you say like Facebook or instagram I don’t have that I have TikTok so that could be why.
