Not gonna lie, I feel like a bad person for liking this film.
I think the film is a complete and utter nutcase, but god is it entertaining. The sheer brilliance of the comedy/fever dream aesthetic is great. I think what’s interesting though is how dystopian it all feels, after the tornado it’s as if people changed. I liked that, and honestly it was a pretty good idea. While the film can make people feel gross, I felt the only thing my stomach was churning at was the bath scene. Hear me out, not necessarily disturbing, but it’s pretty gross. The cinematography feeling homemade, and the water looking like sewage, not to mention the mess he makes eating the chocolate bar. It’s all just an overload of uncomfortableness, that made my stomach feel off.
The thing about it feeling dystopian, is that the fact how every person in this film is a completely insane. Whether it’s how they look, dress or even the way they act. They’re all just so freaky. They just feel so off if you know what I mean. It’s like going somewhere as a tourist when the country is very self patriotic. It feels uncomfortable to be there, like you’re a target to these people.
Chloë Sevign did a great job on these costumes, they all feel so gross and rugged. As if they’ve been used like 2,000 times before. I also feel the ones that had cleaner clothes on looked weirdly unique. There’s a lot of moments that I thought to myself that this place is genuinely fucked, for example the ‘Is this your cat?’ Scene that leads to something honestly off putting to watch. Speaking of the characters looks, I just wanted to quickly say that the kid that played Solomon, is one unique face. I’m not gonna call him a freak because that’s rude and quite honestly he’s not. His face works for this film and role, it’s weird look and honestly it adds for the unnatural tone of the film. Which saying this I mean NO disrespect in the thing I’ve just said, I mean it in a positive light.
A lot of scenes in the were off putting, but I think that something that helped get through the film was the soundtrack. I quite liked it, it had some good picks and it was fun, which is weird because while the film is funny, and entertaining, it’s also very dark. I think the film is very up and down if you know what I mean, it’s a very interesting rollercoaster of a film. Oh and the thing I really wanted to talk about was the fact that it would sometimes change to this VHS type of camera. Like watching a tape, now I am not entirely sure what that is about, my assumption is the before the tornado citizens, and then the after, which in ways both and weird. But the aftermath is just….something.
