Happiness
When the credits were rolling I started laughing….then crying like that Pedro Pascal meme.
Happiness is pretty much about being happy, everyone wants to be, but they definitely have different ways of showing it. It’s definitely one of the more disturbing and traumatic films I’ve seen, but it does such a good job at this uncomfortable setting and conversations. Some made me laugh, and others made me want to throw myself out my window. In a way I’m not sure what they were trying to achieve making this film, maybe a film that would make you laugh, cry, and want to be sick all in 2 hours. Maybe, and if that’s so they did a good job.
The film felt deeply disturbing to its roots, I felt they weren’t going to play by anyone’s rules and they showed it; whether it was the dialogue, the characters, or the insane story. It was all messed up. I think the part that made me want to throw myself out the window was the ‘Would you ever fuck me?’ ‘No, I jerk off instead’, that fucking destroyed me. Like I’m sorry that’s not only sickening to hear, made me want to die after watching it. It was awful, it sent chills down my spine when he said that. Everyone had a pretty masterful performance too, they were all so unlikeable, especially bill..which if you’ve seen the film you know.
I would like to buy the criterion of this film; but sadly I don’t have enough money..yet. Seriously though I think that the film does a very well job at making you hate everything. After watching it, it’s a bit like well my fucking bad for watching this. If you look at this and think ‘oooh fun dramedy’. Well think again because you’re about to get a dramedy, with some insanely messed up shit. Happiness was so surreal, I felt like a bad person for laughing a lot. But I think that’s the best thing, to laugh at moments. Because it relieves a bit of tension from what’s actually going on in this w.t.f film. It’s a film you watch once and again.
This is also my favourite Phillip Seymour Hoffman role too; which it used to be MI3, until I saw this film. His performance in this was not only disgusting, and perverted, but also hysterical. He did a fantastic job at being a complete disgusting human being, but also hilarious. It was his antisocial behaviour that made me laugh at points; and his attitude when the neighbour knocked talking about the other neighbour. He was so out of it and unbothered, in a ‘leave me the fuck alone’ way; and it honestly just made me cry of laughter. The film was just hilarious at moments, but in ways it knew when to be serious.
I think I laughed at wrong moments though; those moments being ones that shouldn’t be so funny. Like the masturbation chat, I don’t know if it was me, or how the script was written, or even the acting being pulled off to be funny. But god I couldn’t stop laughing, it was to a point where it was so surreal like is this even real? The film is very messed up don’t get me wrong, but it knows how to make you laugh at points; which saying that some moments are more funny than others. To be honest Happiness is one big messed up fever dream, but I suppose that’s why I like it so much.
