Lost Highway
That freaky ass dude scared the shit out of me I can’t lie.
It’s crisp 1 in the morning right now and I just got finished watching Lost Highway, and genuinely what on earth did I just watch. Not only am I extremely tired right now, you could not pay me to explain what just happened. I have a form of sense, however there was a lot of sex and tits, more than I anticipated from this film. I also went into this film COMPLETELY naked, I didn’t even read the plot, the most I’d had seen was the little clip of the gorgeously, eerie opening. So this film was just straight up NUTS, from going in completely blind, to being confused like crazy. I do really want to rewatch this film though, as I do own it on criterion!!
In some ways it felt kinda Mullholland Drive in some aspects, however I really need to rewatch that one two. I might do a back to back rewatch of Mullholland Drive, Lost Highway, and Inland Empire. Just to test my mental health and wellbeing. In all seriousness though this film is a major fever dream, it’s terrifying, uncomfortable, disturbing, and confusing as hell. Lost Highway scared me badly, soemthing a lot of horror films fail to do. I’m not sure if it was just the uncertainty of what was going on, or the creepy guy, even the surreal surroundings and distressing environment.
What’s really interesting in this one is that most sex scenes in films are “Erotic”, “sexy”, etc. However every sexual encounter and aspect of this film just felt uncomfortable. It’s a bit like in Blue Velvet but different by many means, in this film there is a lot of sex involved, while some can say, “yeah that’s hot or sexy”. However in my opinion it’s all so weirdly disturbing to watch? It feels like you’re invading someone’s privacy, like you’re not meant to be here watching this.
David Lynch often makes this film even more hard to watch with its heavy metal, grunge soundtrack during disturbing scenes, making them harder to watch and overall just more uneasy. It’s a heavy film in the aspect of being dark, gritty, and doing what a lot of horror films can’t these days, be scary and stay with you for a long time. It’s arguably in MY opinion the hardest Lynch film to watch, while it’s not got the pure evil of Frank in Blue Velvet, it still has that same nauseating, emotional feeling that has your stomach churning.
Lost Highway is brutal, relentless, horrifying, and most of all weird. It’s a part of the Lynch “LA trilogy”, which includes the films such as Lost Highway, Mullholland Drive, and Inland Empire. Honestly it’s a film I’d love to see again at some point with blue velvet and Lynch’s other films. However I’m gonna need some more time to process this one…especially after that FREAK with the camera. But yeah by all means check this out, it’s one of Lynches best works for its overstimulating, hell on screen. Also has an amazing soundtrack.
