Beautiful Boy
In the beginning, the dad was so focused on getting back the kid he used to know, that he neglected the one he had in the present. He definitely still cared for him, and wanted to understand, but his methods were way too fast paced and surface levelled. I don’t know much that he could’ve done differently, but he was clearly not using the methods that Nic needed.
Nic obviously expressed, that needed someone who could understand him in silence, and help him move at his own pace, while still putting him on a tighter leash. Therefore, it would be difficult for him to receive that help from his dad, since they already had such a specific bond that couldn’t be moved. This is why the mom was the better choice at the time, since she had kept a distance between her and Nic, and therefore didn’t try to push him as much. (Of course I know that the dads pushing was only out of love)
Due to all this support Nic received from his parents, he knew, that he could always turn to them when things got bad. This is why he kept pushing the boundaries, and going back into his cycle. When they finally let him go, his cycle could finally take a change.
I love how they portrayed the difficult and long journey, and showed that things don’t just go back to normal, yet they can definitely get better.
