I haven’t seen this movie in what I believe is 4 years and it certainly needed the rewatch. A lot of its themes and jokes don’t exactly land with a 13 year old but I can actually watch and understand this movie now.
I didn’t pick up on the stuff with Mark when I was younger. I thought it would’ve been super cool to have a person to talk about movies and music with but it’s interesting to watch in with that hindsight in mind because now I know I would’ve fallen for it.
Elliot Page is great in this movie which I completely forgot about, though I relate far more than I used to. Particularly the line “I don’t know what kind of girl I am.” Man, the writing is great.
I have trouble deciding if I like Michael Cera’s performance in this one more or less than his in Scott Pilgrim. He’s fun to watch in this one as well constantly fumbling with his words and never saying quite the right thing. A nice arch in the end.
The soundtrack is also very fun and the constant mentions of bands like the Melvin’s, soundgarden, and Nirvana. I especially like “All I Want is You,” and “Well Respected Man.” This is also probably the only time I can listen to Kimya Dawson.
