Blade Runner 2049
I’ve never left a review of this movie because I never thought I could accurately say all the things I want to about my favorite film of all time. It means so much to me in so many different ways. It’s what got me into movies in general, it’s what got me into editing, it’s what got me onto letterbox in the first place.
I’ve had a passion for cyberpunk aesthetic, dystopian, synth wave genres long before I saw this movie, so I’m not exaggerating when I say it was life changing to see it in such a masterfully made movie like this. The cinematography and sounds design obviously gets talked about enough, at this point everyone knows that every frame of this movie is a painting.
The ambiguity of this film is another aspect that really shines, especially when it comes to Joi’s character. When he sees her on the bridge and she calls him the same name that HIS joi calls him, as a viewer you feel like you’re in his shoes. It all begs the question as to whether or not their relationship was real, but in the end it doesn’t matter because he loved her, and she was “real for him.”
I know it’s an ironic, satirical, overused statement to say that “Ryan Gosling is me” but the life that K lives in this movie mirrors mine in so many ways. His existence in a large, metropolitan city and yet being so isolated hits so close to home for me. His search for purpose is something that anyone can relate to. You’ll always have people telling you to do this or do that, to live your life this way or that way, but only YOU can, and should decide.
