Before Sunset
right person, wrong time
If a love poem was a movie, it would be this movie.
I'm so glad that this movie didn't ruin the first one and that it actually made the first movie even better. You can see how love changes in a person as they get older. The increase in tension during the movie makes the story even better. In the beginning, the main characters talked to each other about everything without it getting awkward or tense. They talked to each other so openly as if they had been talking to each other every day for years. What I also love is how openly they talk about being in love with each other all the time without actually saying it. Until they really realize during the movie how much that one night has changed their love life and their thoughts about romance and desire.
I am absolutely convinced that the dialog of the Before trilogy is one the best that exists in movies.
My favorite quotes:
*„People don‘t want to admit it, but it‘s like we have these innate set-points and it‘s like nothing much that happens to us changes our disposition.“
*
*„But sometimes I worry that I‘ll get to the end of my life feeling I haven’t done all I wanted to do.“
*
*„There‘s an Einstein quote I really really like. He said if you don’t believe in any kind of magic or mystery, you’re basically as good as dead.“
*
*„I‘ve always felt there was some kind of mystical core of the universe.“
*
*„I guess when you‘re young, you just believe there‘ll be many people with whom you‘ll connect with. And later in life, you realize it only happens a few times.“
*
*„Well, you know, the world might be less free than we think.“
*
*„I don’t need a man to feed me but I still need a man to love me and that I could love.“
*
*„I was thinking, for me it’s better I don’t romanticize things as much anymore. I was suffering so much all the time. I still have lots of dreams but they’re not in regard to my love life.“
*
*„It reminded me how genuinely romantic I was, how I had so much hope in things and now it‘s like I don’t believe in anything that relates to love. I don’t feel things for people anymore. In a way, I put all my romanticism into that one night and I was never able to feel all this again. Like, somehow this night took things away from me and I expressed them to you and you took them with you. It made me feel cold, like love wasn’t for me.“
*
*„Reality and love are almost contradictory for me.“
*
*„I know it‘s my fault because I never felt it was the right man. Never. But what does it mean, the right man, the love of your life? The concept is absurd, we can only be complete with another person.“
*
*„But I‘m dying inside. I‘m dying because I‘m so numb. I don’t feel pain or excitement, I’m not even bitter, I‘m just…“
„And I know that there‘s something wrong, that I can’t keep living like this, that there’s gotta be more to love that commitment. But then I think that I might have given up on the whole idea of romantic love.“*
