House
I have no notes. This film is incredible.
Ok, I lied of course I have MANY THOUGHTS. (I've no idea how people write one-sentence meme reviews of movies. I've tried and I just can't do it, I always have so much to say!)
Before you read my thoughts, please go read this review by Joshua Dysart. It provides great background into the making of this movie.
I started noticing this film on Letterboxd, watched and reviewed by so many people whose tastes I admire, so I knew I had to track it down. I subscribed to BFI Player specifically to watch this (and Tetsuo the Iron Man, my next watch!) and I'm so glad I did.
What a bonkers masterpiece.
It takes in everything you know about making movies and flips it on its head. It's not only surreal in tone and imagery, but in format and production and style and even the cuts between scenes - no two transitions are the same as each is more inventive than the last.
It's a magical dreamlike pop-art fantasy horror with an amazing cast of characters that I fell in love with as soon as I met them. Angel, Fantasy, Melody, Sweetie, Kung Fu, Prof, and Mac are all now living in my heart and I would watch a dozen movies about them and read a thirty volume manga about their fantastical schoolgirl adventures.
It's gory but not really? It's horror but not really? It's about witches and haunted houses and vengeful lovelorn spirits and teenage romance and childlike adventure and so much more and there are so many better reviews out there than this one but all I can say is that I will be watching this movie over and over until the day I die.
