It
Quite possibly the single scariest image from my memories of my local video store growing up as a kid was the poster of this series hanging on the wall opposite the counter. Pennywise, with his creepy face and scary claws peering over the corner of the poster is burned in my mind. Which may be why it's taken me over 30 years to sit down and watch it, despite having seen the modern remakes and read the book three times (easily my favourite King book).
I feel like the remakes do the half of the story with the characters as kids better than this version, but this version is more faithful with the adult versions. My favourite parts of the book are the bits with them as kids (NOT including THAT scene...IYKYK), so overall I think I'll always prefer the 2017 IT movie. Saying that, watching this adaptation brought me closer to the feeling I get when I read the book. Derry is better realised here, and as I said before, when the adult Loser's Club all come together, you can feel the love they have for each other and the little moments all come together to paint a picture of this unbreakable bond.
While Bill Skarsgard is terrifyingly unreal as Pennywise, Tim Curry here is iconic. Am I as deeply, primordially afraid of his portrayal as Skarsgard's? No, and this may be because this is 34 years old now, but there's still so much to love about Curry's performance. I love how quickly he turns vicious and vile, and that make-up is superb.
IT may be showing a little frays around the edges now, but as an adaptation of the source material, it's pretty solid.
