Weapons

What a fantastic horror film. Probably my favourite horror of the last 5 years, at least. When you come out in the same year as Sinners and manage to not only match that giant but (dare I say it) top it, you know you’ve got a certified classic on your hands.
The premise is enthralling. It’s something that can easily fit in a trailer or a sentence and instantly hook you, but as the movie progresses it gets so much more complex and layered and entirely unpredictable (much like director Zach Cregger’s previous movie Barbarian).
The structure and the pacing are frankly superb and only serve to tease out that unpredictability. I can imagine that for some the way it keeps going back and revisiting the same scenes from another angle, another viewpoint, might be frustrating to some, but it only added to the depth for me.
If you’re going to layer character viewpoint on top of character viewpoint, you need enough of an ensemble to maintain that, and Weapons doesn’t have a single bad character/performance. The way Cregger is able to fulfil a largely fantastical/supernatural movie with completely natural performances is brilliant. You can tell that one of Cregger’s inspirations is Magnolia, which is a bizarre comparison but very appropriate. The narratives overlap, perspectives shift, revelations give new context to what we’re seeing, and all the while the tension builds.
The natural performances and realistic reactions to circumstances lull you into a false sense of security, because when the scares hit they are so creepy, so visceral that the shock snaps you out of your comfort and completely unnerves you. The imagery is often truly disturbing, and while this is the second movie in a row that Cregger relies on Hagsploitation, the eventual reveal of the big bad is fantastically creepy and well earned.
Going in knowing as little as possible serves this movie well, but I feel like repeat viewings would be so rewarding. Just an excellent all-rounder, and unlike anything I’ve ever seen before.
