Sinners
If you crossed a musical with horror, gangster crime, drama, romance, comedy, and coming of age story genres with all time performances, incredible score / music and stunning visuals. Layers and layers of genius to this film with the subtext. A re-telling of the American immigrant story and racial experience of the US through personas of Native American, African American, Irish, Anglo Southern White, Mixed ethnicity, and Asian existence in the time period but honestly through our modern era. A story of individual and communal sacrifice (war, crime, poverty, sickness, family, racism) and the want for nothing by the oppressed but the freedom to exist, form community, live peaceful and derive happiness from day to day existence. Minor spoiler but I can’t get over the MBJ shaking hands trying to roll a cig at the end of the movie because his brother used to roll them for him. Tremors or shaking was common for ww1 vets with ptsd. MBJ literally couldn’t smoke without his brother and if you smoke and roll it’s hella annoying to ask someone to roll for you for life but his twin did it without hesitation every single time in the movie because he knew his brother couldn’t😭 the best plot twist of the movie is there was no twin beef before for the vampiring just complete understanding of each others flaws and acceptance
