Obsession
Just wow what an amazing experience. There’s so many things to be said about this movie. The premise is incredibly simple, but the way they execute the story and build up to the climax is perfect. From the trailers I fully expected it to be scary, but the amount of times I struggled to look at the screen was overwhelming. The tension, especially in the scenes where Nikki was shrouded in complete darkness, was genuinely intense.
At its core, the story really highlights the very real problems surrounding obsessive relationships and the idea of love vs actually being with someone. Bear is a very complex character in the sense that he’s not inherently evil, but clearly has issues with self-confidence and obsession that make him spiral into deplorable behaviour. Nikki is the real victim, which you get from the very start after seeing how genuinely good of a person she is and how she gets utterly broken down throughout the movie.
The entire friend group are quite frankly horrible, as Ian and Sarah also have issues revolving around jealousy, which further reinforces the connection to the title of obsession by showing that all the characters are flawed. Inde Navarrette’s performance is an absolute standout, worthy of any and all awards, especially that Oscar. The pure emotion and sadistic takeover that she portrays was genuinely horrible in the best way. The soundtrack is also on point and extremely fitting. There’s a lot to be said, however ultimately, it did the best job of making me feel disgusted, terrified, and upset, leaving me thinking about it for hours. The whole thing was depressing, but that ending was particularly grim and hard to forget. Props to Curry Barker and everyone involved.
