Carrie
De Palma’s Carrie is a masterclass in psychological horror that actually deserves its status as a cinematic classic. Unlike other horror films that rely purely on cheap jump scares, this film builds its tension through a deeply uncomfortable, slow-burn atmosphere.
The acting is a clear standout here. Sissy Spacek is phenomenal as Carrie, perfectly balancing a sense of fragile innocence with an underlying, eerie power. You genuinely feel for her isolation. Piper Laurie is equally brilliant, playing Carrie’s hyper-religious, abusive mother with a terrifying intensity that grounds the movies horror in reality rather than just supernatural tropes.
From a directing standpoint, De Palma is perfect in his craft. The creative camera angles and visual tricks make Carrie feel completely unique for its time. The pacing is deliberate, slowly turning up the pressure until the legendary prom scene, which delivers one of the most memorable and chaotic climaxes in cinema history.
