Dev.D
"Great moves come from bad books" - Anurag Kashyap
Anurag Kashyap, while suffering a film banned by the government and one not getting cleared by the censor board and on top of that going through a separation was like "You want Devdas, I'll give you Devdas" and he did so in his style.
Dev D is an argument, rather than an interpretation of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's iconic Devdas.
It totally slams the notion of romanticizing the main character Dev after all his horrible doings. Kashyap wanted to make Dev in such a way that not even one viewer gets out of the theatre and dreams of becoming or even appreciate him.
Huge shoutout to Vasan Bala for introducing these two powerful female actors into the big screen. Abhay Deol's screen presence is so strong that you cannot gaze anywhere else when he's in front of you.
Some filming techniques and edits are just out of the world (all thanks to the best editor of this country, Aarti Bajaj). I mean I had goosebumps as well as in awe of one particular edit.
And now to the score, holy fucking jesus Amit Trivedi you have only gone and made the perfect album ever in India. Literally all of it are absolute masterpieces, the kind of diversity this album has is commendable. Dev D album at 2am will prolly take you to either heaven or hell depending on the drink you're sipping on.
Re-release is the best thing to have happened in the industry.
