The Bride!
I truly wanted to LOVE this move. And I … just didn’t. It wasn’t bad, there were elements that I DID love. But ultimately… I was kind of hung up on the whole “I’m gonna lie to you about being my fiancée” thing that’s forgiven almost immediately. I think they highlighted the whole “enthusiastic” aspect of consent well. But at the end of the day… the “informed” fell flat. If you’re with someone (sexually, romantically, whatever) under false pretenses, ITS NOT CONSENT. Sleeping with someone under a false identity is rightfully a CRIME in some places. I know, I know, they didn’t “really” sleep together, but didn’t their love story make the same impact? Personally, I felt bad for Frank, but I think The Bride forgave him FAR too quickly. It would’ve been cool if they ended up besties at the end with no romantic implications instead. I’m absolutely not one of those people who says romance can’t exist in a feminist movie, but I felt like Frank could’ve learned a bit more by the end.
TLDR: CONSENT IS INFORMED. IF YOU ARE LYING TO YOUR PARTNER ABOUT YOUR IDENTITY, ITS NOT CONSENT. END OF STORY. THAT IS ASSAULT.
