Barbie
When this movie first came out, one of my friends invited me to watch it in the theater. I was slightly unsure because the title, “Barbie” didn’t seem like something I would enjoy, it seemed “girly”. I wasn’t usually into those kind of things. But obviously I went because who’s going to turn down a free movie, especially in a theater?
I did not expect the statement that would come out of this movie. I expected dolls coming to life, or a story of dolls played with by little girls. This is a movie about women. Women’s stories. Barbie in this movie is LITERALLY “stereotypical” Barbie and when actual normal human things start happening to her and she is immediately distanced.
I myself have been someone to look down on the idea of Barbie for being too “girly” when Barbie being girly is the reason why it is so important to girls. Barbie in this movie is watching genuine emotion because it is something she has never been able to express, as a Barbie but most importantly as a woman.
She discovers this world, our world, where everything is ran by men. And it really puts perspective on things. Things women go through just to uphold the standard of “good enough” never truly exceeding further unless they are “perfect”. And you can try and find a perfect in an imperfect world but it truly does not exist. Being perfect is just hiding the normal parts of yourself. “We have to always be extraordinary but somehow we’re always doing it wrong” as quoted in the movie. This movie is literally so important and still extremely hilarious.
