30 FOREIGN FILMS IN MARCHPIT STOP 30: BELGIUM
Speechless. I have never cried so much whilst watching a movie. One of the most heartbreaking and beautiful films. Such an incredible story that tells of suicide, grief, masculinity, family and friendship. The score strikes straight to the core and so deeply helps you connect to the weight of the emotion that this film carries. The cinematography and visuals are absolutely incredible and contribute so much to the beauty and nature of it all, specifically with the fields of flowers and constant running through them and the final shot. This coming of age story is one that shares some universal themes, values and experiences of young men and their emotions and relationships. Grasping the feelings and dealings with grief and confusion and fitting in whilst young is something so difficult and challenging and this portrays it in a way in which supplements the story and true friendship and coming to terms with things. The relationship between brothers and close friends parents is something which I also loved and helped find a connection to. Eden Dambrine was absolutely insane in this performance and deserves the world. This film is one which shares a certain relation to me personally and can see reflections of certain parts in my own experiences whether they were along the themes of LGBT youth living or just experiences with having friendships with other boys. I have seen some critiques on the shifting of subject but I did see why Dhont chose to shift it and to me didn’t hinder my experience of the film as a whole as I see it in a shift in how a young persons brain works and the emotions of which can change at any moment which was reflected in the story and its writing.
