Week#12: Queer Asian Cinema
I was genuinely baffled by how great this was.
What begins as a fight over insurance money slowly reveals itself to be a story about grief, resentment, and the complicated ways people remember those they've lost.
The mother, the son, and the father's male partner are all hurting in different ways, and the film never reduces any of them to villains. Everyone just wants to believe they mattered to the person they lost.
The theater play, re-enacted after seventeen years as a way of remembering, was especially moving.
